Heidelberg!

Guten Tag alles!

So sorry I havent been updating.. Just alittle busy.. I have German classes each morning, so Im not as free as I used to.. But I'll try to update ya?

I'll start with Day 11, on Thursday.. It was German class as usual.. We went together.. Today is with Frau Wasche. Her name is definitely German! hahah! She spoke really fast this time.. I think she knows English, but she doesnt want to use it.. So just like the previous teacher, she speaks only in German, just faster.. :P:P I was expecting a more interesting class, because the other was quite boring.. And so.... I was disappointed.. She's as boring.. But its ok.. I have my friends!

After class, we went to eat at the Mensa.. After that, since I was the only one that didnt open my bank account the previous day, I did it alone.. Thank goodness, most of them accompanied me.. Then we walked to Frau Nothnagel's office, for a talk on health insurance.. OMG!! Its compulsory to buy the German health insurance that covers you 100%.. Its about 400,00 euros for 6 months.. No arguing, its compulsory to buy for the whole of 6 months, and it starts from April.. Wth!! So I can only effectively use for 4 months, and 2 months will go to the company/ the government.. Hahah! I had a huge taste of welfare state.. Ouch! 400,00 euros is ALOT for a student like me!! I thought the lady that sold us the insurance was a bitch.. The tone and the way she spoke, all of us hated her! And she was sooooooo confusing.. She can say one thing, and say something contradicting right after.. Like a guy asked if we can pay twice, she said no.. And when he clarified asking if he can pay 3 months first and pay another 3 months later, she said its ok.. hahhahaha!! Such a clown! So yeah.. I had to sign up there and then.. Compulsory mah!

And then we were walking back to Luisenplatz, I happen to read the words on a building.. It said something like Turkish Islamic Centre, in German! OMG!! And there was a supermarket there too!! I was sooooooo freaking happy! Yup, there's a mosque there.. I think there's a restaurant and a barber! Lol! Its quite a big area.. Not bad ah! I shared chicken with Chen Bing and Shuang Jie.. Halal chicken!! So happy! I got food for the night! :):)

Then we went home.. OMG, I didnt know the chinese guy cooked the chicken for me!! Soooooo nice la!! It was halal chicken, and they brought a rice cooker, so they cooked rice for me too! Soooooo nice la! But I actually had plans.. Marco actually cooked pasta for me.. Just the pasta with eggs.. Its supposed to be carbonara, with ham.. But he didnt put any for me.. Super! I didnt have to cook at all! Lol!

So after dinner, we all gathered at the boys' kitchen.. Played some music, sing songs.. And Marco has karaoke in his laptop!! We karaoke la! Lol!! He has any songs! You name it, he's got it! It was nice.. :):)

Day 12, Friday.. Ok, I went to class.. Then during lunch, I met an Iranian lady! She's taking the German classes too, but a lower level.. She's a phD student, in some engineering.. Yesh, of course she has a husband that does the same thing as her, but he didnt join the classes.. Yeah, we talked..

Then I think we bought some stuff.. Someone said that the weather forecast stated that it might snow, if not, it'll rain.. And it was freaking cold la!! Then we went home, because it was raining.. The rain isnt like Singapore.. Its the kind that wont get you drenched.. Very light rain.. This is good because I dont have an umbrella.. Probably I wont get one, because many of us have umbrellas.. So we can just share-share.. :)

We went home, and again, at night, we had some singing again.. Ohya! I forgot to tell you that two of the Brazilian guys actually brought their guitars with them.. YESH! From Brazil! And they are good.... Seriously!!

Then Yen Ching briefed us on the plan for Saturday.. Which is......... Heidelberg!!! Weeeee~!!!

Day 13, Saturday! We started off early.. I think about 7.30am!! We're supposed to catch a bus to Darmstadt train station at about 8.09am.. Guess how many of us went? 15!! 6 girls, 9 guys.. It was fun, but very tiring!! Ohya.. I forgot to charge my camera battery, so I only got to take these few pics, before we depart.. Lol! Sorry! [The other photos (of Heidelberg) below are from my HP.. Sorry for the not-so-good quality photos..]


We reached Heidelberg about 10.30am.. Yup, we paid about 7,80 euros for the train to and fro.. Not bad ah, quite cheap! Its actually the group ticket.. :) We walked and walked and walked.. We reached a busy street that sold everything! Kate said it was a very expensive street! Got alot of branded stuff too.. Lol! It was nice..


We went into a Catholic church.. I think this is my first time entering a church.. It was beautiful actually.. Very grand.. There was an old man in the church.. He was soooo nice.. He spoke in English, and explain some stuff to a few of them.. And he even offered to take a photo for us.. Very nice man.. There was a GIGANTIC piano like thing.. Its for the church, I cant remember its name.. Its really huge! They just bought a new one, and the old one was much much more smaller.. Lol! It was interesting...



We went to the the university museum and the student jail!! Its really really interesting.. Its a prison for students that commit offences, disturbing public peace etc.. Its was super interesting because the prison is filled with graffiti, drawing etc.. You'll have photos engraved into the walls.. Craving of names on the tables and chairs.. It was really interesting.. There are only 5 rooms in the prison.. There's a bed, a table, a chair and a heater in each room..

Then we walked to the Heidelberg Schloss [Heidelberg castle].. It is seriously beautiful! I think Heidelberg is a very beautiful town.. It has a river, and you'll see some buildings on the hill.. Oh, the castle is on the hill too.. Enjoy the pics!

Day 14, Sunday! Two weeks in Germany! hahah! I just stayed at Quartier 56.. I think all of us stayed here.. It was raining, so I also didnt feel like going out.. Kate actually asked me to accompany her to find a Catholic church.. She wants to attend a mass, and she actually wants me to follow! I would if I had time.. But I wanted some time alone.. Chatted, do some laundry, do some work.. Yesh, I didnt blog.. :p:p Ohya! I did laundry for the first time! It was an experience because everything was in German! Lol!! The washing maschine was good.. BUT the dryer didnt dry my clothes!! Now I have clothes hanging all over my room.. Damn messy!!

At night, our usual gathering.. There will always be alcohol.. But Im sooooooo glad a few of them dont drink!! Nicolas has never drank, like me! So it was cool.. No pressure to drink etc.. :):) I like.. Its nice.. You know, Im glad Im in Dieburg.. Imagine if Im in Karlshof, I'll have to put up with all the partys.. Laundry parties la, Italien party la etc... And since we're far from anywhere, everyone is usually here at night, and that we can even have these gatherings.. So Im glad to be in Dieburg.. :) Things happen for a reason.. :) Oh but this night was different, because the Brazilians showed some dancing moves! Lol! All of them know at least some moves, and so it was cool! Watch below.. Nicolas, Bruno and Pedro danced with Kate.. The rest just watched and have fun! hahah!






Today today... Nothing much.. Went to the Turkish supermarket with a few of them.. Im lucky because the rest also wants to buy something from there.. I noticed one thing is that the supermarkets dont sell any chicken!! The germans dont eat chicken!! Lol! So there's alot of pork.. hahah! So its good that the Turkish supermarket sells chicken.. Some of them would buy the chicken too.. So Im not alone.. I dont have to go to the supermarket alone everytime.. So its cool! :)

Oh! And today, it was raining both ice and water! Lol! I asked Bruno, from Brazil, if it was snow or ice, and he confidently said it was snow, when he has never seen show in his life!! Such a clown!! Anyway, it was cool! :):)

The German class begins

Guten Abend alles!

I kinda just came back from Darmstadt..

We met in the morning.. All the exchange students went together.. We took the 07:53 bus to Darmstadt Schloss [it means castle, but it became a library from TUD students] and walked to the university..

We all had to check our names on the list to see which class we're in.. There were level 1, level 2/3, level 4/5 and advanced level.. I was sooooooo surprised to be in level 4/5.. Its quite good actually.. Im sooo glad my German wasnt too bad..

Those exchange students in my class were Marina (Spain), Pedro and Bruno (Brazil) and Gerardo (Mexico).. The teacher is actually Lituan.. But I seriously thought she was German la.. Her name is too hard to pronounce.. Frau Lina Apčelauskaitė.. Yup! She spoke in German all the way.. She studied English for only a month.. So she doesnt speak English at all!! So if we wanna ask how to say a word in German, we'll have to try to describe or explain in German, and vice versa.. So yup! I think I sooooooooooooooo gonna improve my German like this.. Im forced to speak in German.. Only German.. But its good.. And at the start of the class, she spoke really really slowly.. hahaha! As if we're beginners.. Lol! So funny the way Gerardo was telling Yen Ching and Chen Sin how slowly she spoke.. He was definitely exaggerating la.. Such a clown!

Class, I thought, was quite boring.. We did worksheets.. It was manageable.. Between manageable and easy.. Marina thought it was easy.. Yeah, at most times, it was really easy.. I guess its only the start.. And I do hope classes will be more interesting! Learning languages, I believe, can be very fun!

So we had a half hour break from 10:30 to 11:00.. We all went to the canteen.. Its called Mensa in German.. And whenever we say Mensa, Gerardo will have this smile on his face.. He said it means like a dumb girl in Mexico.. Lol!

Then all those that live in Dieburg, we all met after class.. We all know each other and so we stuck together.. We went to eat lunch at the Mensa.. Then we went to open our bank account.. I forgot my passport la!! So I was the only one that couldnt open our bank account.. Bloody hell!! Nvm... Then we all went to Aldi supermarket, and Arena to buy more home stuff.. Then back to Dieburg!

We took the bus 671.. AND.................... The bus didnt stop at the nearest busstop from Quartier 56.. So we actually ended up in the countryside again! Where I was previously!! Goodness!! All of us were all laughing and joking about it.. As Pedro would say, 'its the same number, but they all go different directions!' Lol!! And we crossed over and took the other bus back to Dieburg.. Thank goodness, we waited for only about 5 min!

And guess what, in the bus, we actually found the other exchange students that we lost in Darmstadt.. So basically, all the exchange students living in Dieburg were on the bus.. It was really funny!! Lesson learnt, make friends with the bus driver!

Then we went back to Quartier 56.. So here I am now.. Most of them came back, rest for awhile and left an hour later.. They're going to Darmstadt for a party.. Its a party for students in TUD, I think its organised by studentenwerk, which is an organisation.. Its on every Wednesday night from 21:00.. So I dont know how they'll be back.. Because I think the last bus to Dieburg is at about 23:00 plus plus?? hahah! Lets see how it goes tmr..

So I have a date with some of the girls in this hostel.. We're cooking dinner together! haha! Wish us luck! :):)

New friends!

Looks like I'll have to get used to blogging at night now, because my German intensive course starts tmr! Yesh!! Every day, Monday to Friday, from 09:00 to 12:30.. Dont ask me why so long.. I also have no idea.. I guess its intensive? Lol!

Anyway, today I met lots of people.. Actually we arranged to meet at the main entrance at 08:30 to catch the 08:50 bus.. We were on time, but the bus didnt come!!! So we waited for the next bus, which was of course half an hour later.. Yeah... So we took the opportunity to chat and get to know others..


Ok, let's see where are they from.. Brazil, Mexico, Turkey, Italy, Greece, Hong Kong, Spain.. Yup! I think they are all nice.. Really.. We went to Dolivostraße, for our welcome day.. Just a simple one, with briefing and important stuff..

After the welcome day, we all actually went together.. There were others that didnt stay in Dieburg, so they arrived earlier.. And they didnt join us.. There were Chinese people.. It was about 4 or 5 of them.. I dont know why they always kept to themselves.. Made me glad that I came alone, because I dont know anyone and Im forced to mingle.. Yeah... But I've been doing well.. The Dieburg people are really nice.. I think because we're in Dieburg and there's not many buses.. We'll always have to go together.. And I guess thats where we get to know them better.. And of course, during the German intensive course too.. So its cool! :)

Anyway, after the test, we went to the canteen in TUD.. Yup! It was nice! I happened to bring my own food, I made chicken ham sandwiches for lunch! I expected that I might not find a halal food place, so yeah, I brought my own food.. Save money anyway.. But I ate vanilla pudding there.. I tell you, its SUPERB!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE IT!! hehe! Then we went to Luisenplatz to get our monthly bus card.. Its much cheaper to travel with it, because one trip from Dieburg to Darmstadt, costs 2,30 euros.. And another 2,30 euros back.. And if we travel somemore within Darmstadt, another 1,50 per ride.. Its crazy! And the monthly card costs 56,90 euros.. So its definitely worth it..

The test was hard!! It was a 20-minute test, fill-in-the-blanks kind.. The Italian guy, Marco, is a clown la! He doesnt know any German la! But he's a funny guy, really.. Nice and friendly, and speaks good English too.. :) He'll definitely be in the lowest level class.. hahahah! Which starts at 08:30 everyday! Lol! I cant wait to see which class I'll be in.. The results are by tmr morning.. hehe!


After the test, we went grocery shopping and shopping for our room (beddings, cooking stuff and toilet paper, which is super important..) I think Im one of the very few that knew the area, without using the map! I learnt during my first week in Darmstadt! hehe!

So Im back home now.. I cooked my dinner.. Maggi and I also did scrambled eggs with sausages! Im full and happy! :) Anyway, I better save my maggi! Just in case Im craving for it again in a few weeks.. hehe!

Im soooo gonna learn how to cook some Mexican dish, probably from Gerardo.. And I wanna learn Italian dishes too! hahha!

OH!! And I saw in a brouchers, which all the sports.. Got silat!! I feel like joining them! Lol! Just for fun! But then again, I scared to fight.. They're such very big!! :P:P I'll see how it'll fit my schedule la.. hehe!

Oh well... I got nothing else to blog about.. I have to sleep early.. I feel like a bum! Sleep sooo much, but I really cannot make it la.. So sleepy.. I got to wake up early.. Got to catch the bus at 07:53!! Bleagh~!

Start of 2nd week in Germany

Guten Abend alles!

Today is Day 8.. Im blogging at night because tmr I have a 'Welcome Day' and a German test! Wish me luck!

Today I was supposed to go to Darmstadt in the morning to see Frau Nothnagel with Gerardo.. But change of plans.. We'll just talk to her tmr..

I went to Darmstadt at 12:15 to meet Martina.. She was supposed to bring me to this store which sells really really cheap home stuff, like beddings, cooking stuff etc.. But when we reached there, we found out that the store was no longer there!! Ohno!! What luck!! So we went to the city centre.. Then we walked to the mosque.. Martina was sooooo kind to help me ask for the mosque in Darmstadt.. She has alot of Muslim friends, because there alot of Muslims in TUD.. Turks, Iranians, Iraqis etc.. :)

The mosque doesnt look like a mosque!! Its at some alley, and there's an entrance.. It was locked! So I was too scared and shy to ring the bell and go it.. Probably another time, with another Muslim.. :)

Then she left me.. So I walked to the halal supermarket, bought food stuff! I bought stuff to bring for lunch tmr.. Im making chicken ham sandwich for lunch! Weeee~!!

And then I went back to the city centre.. Bought more stuff for my room.. Gosh!! There were sooooo heavy.. I was suffering!! I put a 1-litre mineral water in my bag, and there was rice in my bag.. So it was crazy!! Oh well... What to do.. Alone mah!

Then I went home.. I met a Turk and a Pole, who lives near me.. Yup! My Singapore friend, Yu Fan, has also arrived! So its great! There's more people! Yeay!

I cooked dinner!! Egg omelette, sausages and tomato soup! The sausages and tomato soup were good, but I thought the egg was a disappointment.. I dont know why it didnt turn out the way I wanted it to be.. Yeah..

At night, me, Yen Ching and Chen Sin went to Gerardo's room and we sang a birthday song in German! We bought him a tiny flower pot and a card.. Its his 21st birthday.. :)

Tmr, we'll be going to Darmstadt together.. We'll see how it goes tmr.. Bismillah..

Frankfurt am Main

Guten Morgen alles!

Day 6, I was supposed to meet Martina at Luisenplatz in Darmstadt at 15:00.. I left Quartier 56 at 14:00.. I had actually searched online for the bus timing, but there wasnt any bus on Saturday and Sundays at the nearest busstop.. So I had to find the busstop 'Post'.. I ran because I didnt want to miss the bus.. I actually got lost! It is sooooooooo far away! I went a super long way, past many many busstops, until I found the 'Post' stop! In total, I walked for 45min.. I walked very fast for 45min!! Anyway. the next bus was at 15.15.. OMG!! Im soooo gonna be late.. I cant use my Singtel no., because it has been suspended and I have not activated my German no. I tried in the morning, but I cant..

The bus came, and I reached Darmstadt at 15:35!! Martina wasnt there!! OMG!! I was sooooooo sad!! She must have waited for me for very long.. So I just walked around.. Near Aldi [a supermarket], there was some performance.. I thought they were really really good.. So I actually bought a CD for 15,00 euros.. I wished I could buy all, but it was expensive.. I LOVE their music.. Watch below!



Its in German btw.. But I bought their English album.. Sehr gut!

Then I went to the halal supermarket.. I bought lots of stuff! I was really happy!! :):) I can finally cook something!! :):)

I walked all the way back to Luisenplatz to catch the 18:16 bus to Dieburg.. There, I actually met my friends from NUS!! Chen Sin and Yen Ching.. Thank goodness I recognised them!! They were heading to Dieburg too! They lived in Quartier 56 too!! It was amazing because we didnt meet in Quartier 56, but we met in Darmstadt!! Wow! Lucky me!!

We had to stop at Friedhof busstop and walked about 2-3km back to my hostel.. I introduced them to Gerardo.. Chen Sin actually lives next to Gerardo! Lol! So we planned to go to Frankfurt the next day..

Day 7, we met at 10:00.. We were supposed to walk to the train station, probably 2-3km too, to catch the 11:09 train.. We waited and waited and waited.. NO train!! So we checked the timing.. OHNO!! Its not every hour, its every two hours on weekends!! Arrgggghhh!! The frustration of having to wait and wait!

Anyway, we asked a guy at the train station.. He spoke really fast!! He actually asked if I was from Malaysia!! OMG!! I think thats the closest he can get!! I said I was Malay, but from Singapore.. Wah! He sure knows his map! So cool!! He's a turk, a Muslim.. I couldnt have guessed it! He looks alittle German to me.. Very fair, but I guess its because his hair was white.. haha!

We had to go to Darmstadt first, and change train to go to Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof (main station).. So we reached Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof at about 13:30?? I forgot.. It was a very very long ride..

We went to the tourist information counter.. They actually sold the city map for 0,50 euros.. I didnt buy, but Chen Sin did! We walked and walked.. Took lovely photos!!

After walking, we wanted to just sit and eat.. They were soooo nice to suggest a Muslim place to eat.. There was one near the Hauptbahnhof.. So we walked all the way there.. Alhamdulillah.. Its actually very easy to find Muslim food.. Why I said that? Because its VERY near the Hauptbahnhof.. Its like the central area.. And there were alot of Muslim restaurants there.. Alot of Asian restaurants actually.. I just went to the biggest one, the one I found from zahibah.com website.. I guess its the safest..

I ate turkish pizza.. I think it was good! And the guy there was really nice.. He came to my table and talked to us.. He asked Chen Sin and Yen Ching where they were from.. They are from Malaysia btw.. And he kept talking and talking about Malaysian women! That they are beautiful.. And when Gerardo said he was from Mexico, he started using Spanish phrases and talking about the Mexican dramas etc.. He was really really funny!! Super friendly la! I guess if I go to Frankfurt again, I'll eat at the same shop.. Bayram Kebab Haus! Probably I'll try some other exotic dishes! hehe!

So after that, we walked to the Hauptbahnhof to catch the 17:45 train to Darmstadt.. At Darmstadt, we knew we had to wait for the train at platform 8, for the train at 19:32.. We walked around first.. Checked out other alternatives.. And at 19:20, we went to the platform.. It said 'Asscha...something something...' Ours was supposed to be Darmstadt Nord- Dieburg, I think.. So we waited for the train to leave, and waited for another train.. No more train! When we checked, the 'Asscha...something something...' was actually our train!! Darmstadt Nord- Dieburg-'Asscha...something something...' Yup! So we missed our train! Our next best alternative was a bus at 20:42.. So one more hour of waiting.. Wait and wait and wait.. I hate it!!

I reached Quartier 56 at about 21:30.. So tired! I didnt feel so good because I think I ate really alot just now.. Bleargh~!!

Im better now.. :) Today Im going to see Frau Nothnagel with Gerardo, and then Im meeting Martina! Finally! I hope I wont be late!!

Guten Morgen alles!

Day 5, I went to Darmstadt again.. We left the student residence at 12noon.. We were supposed to see Frau Nothnagel in her office, BUT I forgot she works until 1pm.. I dont get it!! Why until 1pm??!

So we went to Darmstadt.. Walked to TU Darmstadt and we walked by the park.. The park is beside the uni, so it nice.. It's just open space, people were just walking around, cycling, walking their dogs etc..

I felt bad that I made Gerardo follow me to find the mosque.. An old lady I asked early said it was on Müller Straße, but I couldnt find it.. Its all residential buildings.. Perhaps its one of them.. Btw, we happened to be near there, thats why we tried finding the mosque.. Then I brought Gerardo to the lake.. And we walked along Soder Straße, so I know there happen to be one Muslim food place, according to the online website, zahibah.com.. So we ate there.. There, I asked the man about the mosque.. He couldnt tell me exactly where.. Then I asked about a supermarket with halal food.. He also dont know which road and how to give directions.. So I thought I'll need to ask someone else again.. And I asked about prayer times.. He actually gave me his whole calendar, with all the prayer times!! He was soooooo nice la!! He said he'll buy for himself another one tmr.. Soooo nice!! Then while we were eating, 3 men came in.. One was an ang-mo, btw.. They were all Muslims.. Very cool! They helped me alot.. Gave me directions, gave me an online website for prayer times in Germany.. And one of them, Ahmed, drove me and Gerardo to the halal supermarket! Euro Supermarkt! Alhamdulillah!! I was sooooooo happy!! And Ahmed also gave me the number of a Muslim Indon sister.. She lives in Darmstadt.. He told me to call her! I will.. Soon!! When I get my German no., insyaAllah... Alhamdulillah! All these while, Gerardo was so fasinated la! He's Catholic btw..

Anyway, I find it really interesting that it's difficult to find water! Water to drink!! I think we in Singapore take things for granted, like drinkable tapwater! I had to buy mineral water everytime!! Goodness! And interestingly, the bottle of water cost 0,19 euros, plus 0,25 euros.. That is like a deposit.. If you return the empty bottle, you'll get back your 0,25 euros! Power la! So environmentally-friendly! And of course, they dont give plastic bags at all! Either you bring your own bag, or buy one for 0,10 euros?? Thats the cheapest.. Its really cool! I like~....
